WELCOME TO THE PLANETS (TM) Release 1.5

This volume of the PDS Education CD-ROM is version 1.5. Changes from the previous versions are summarized below.

Authoring Tool Version:

On the version 1.0 volume, the Macromedia Director Macintosh projector was created with version 3.1. On Version 1.1, the Macromedia Director application was ported to Director version 4.0. This version was produced with Macromedia Director version 4.0.4.

Glossary:

This version of the disc includes a glossary to be accessed from within the Welcome to the Planets (TM) program. An ASCII version of the glossary (glossary.txt) is supplied in the Document directory of the Welcome to the Planets (TM) CD-ROM.

Curriculum Guide:

This version includes a Welcome to the Planets (TM) Curriculum Guide which features an illustrated users' guide, four sample lessons, tabular and graphic material, and lists of additional print, CD-ROM, and online resources. The guide was developed by NASA's Classroom of the Future. It is accessible from within the Welcome to the Planets (TM) program, but must be read by Adobe's Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader may be installed without fee using the ACROREAD installer program located in the ADOBE folder on the Welcome to the Planets (TM) CD-ROM. (There is one executable for the Macintosh, and one for Windows.) The Curriculum Guide is also available in Microsoft Word version 6 format for Windows and Macintosh machines. These files are located in the CURRICULUM subdirectory of the disc.

Additional images:

This version includes

  1. four images and one movie of Comet Shoemaker/Levy's impacts on Jupiter,

  2. an updated image of Ida, now in color and featuring its newly-discovered moon,

  3. two new images of Halley's Comet, one historic one from 1910 and the other a close-up of Halley's nucleus,

  4. an updated movie showing the moon travelling past the Earth,

  5. a set of 5 images on the Space Shuttle,

  6. two images of Earth, one showing a side-by-side comparison of optical and radar images of the same volcanic eruption, and the other a radar image of an ancient river channel beneath the sands of the Sahara Desert, and

  7. an updated image of Pluto and Charon, from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Corrections:

  1. The names of some features on Venus have been changed since the publication of Welcome to the Planets (TM) Version 1.1:

    • Caldera Ammavaru is now Derceto Corona
    • Bahet Corona is now Ba'het Patera
    • Crater Sommerville is now Crater Balch
    • Pandora Corona is now Selu Corona

  2. On the "Earth Facts" screen the unit of time used to measure Earth's rotation has been corrected from days to hours

  3. On the "Mars Facts" screen the minimum and maximum temperatures have been corrected.

Testing:

The Windows projector has been tested on various system components, primarily Pentium and 486 machines with 2x and faster CD-ROM readers. It has been tested under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

Regrettably, because of PC architectures can vary so widely, we have found that on occasion the Windows projector does not perform adequately. Please see the AAREADME.TXT file in the root directory of this disc for troubleshooting advice.
